My Imaginary Country
MI PAÍS IMAGINARIO
Chile, France, 2022, 83'
During Fall 2019, the Chilean people took the streets to protest against the government of Sebastián Piñera. Prompted by the increase in public transport fares, the protest took on dimensions never seen before in the country: young people and students demanded more democracy, social justice, quality education and public healthcare. In spite of harsh repression, the movement obtained that a constituent assembly is summoned to draw up the new constitutional charter, bound to replace the one approved by Pinochet during the dictatorship.
Patricio Guzman came back to Chile to add a new, essential chapter to his filmography dedicated to his home country: after the poetically suggestive ‘Chilean Trilogy,’ the veteran documentary filmmaker makes a more direct film, putting aside the evocative tone in first person and giving voice to the women, the heroines of the protest. Thus, Guzman serves the political change taking place in his country: My Imaginary Country represents a sort of handover from the generation who resisted the dictatorship to the one currently fighting for a new Chile, with a strong female presence.
