In 1954, the keys to nearly 1,000 apartments were delivered to their tenants: the project occupied the left bank of the Arno river in front of the Cascine Park. It came to be called “Isolotto,” the “new town” of Florence in the words of the mayor, La Pira.
What was previously a waste ground now gathered groups of diverse people: immigrants from Istria, white collars, labourers at Galileo and other factories, professors, militaries, slum dwellers from Rome, persecuted Spanish priests, shepherds from Sardinia, and earthquake victims from Sicily. Diversity indeed ruled in this new neighbourhood, characterizing the historic community of this islet (isolotto, precisely) who then fought for their rights, guided by the rebel priest Don Mazzi (Enzo for the community).
A collective story in which the voice of the characters, juxtaposed with archival footage, takes us back in time and makes us experience the key moments that set the sixties aflame as well as the fights of those who struggled to change and transform the institutions, opening a political and social dialogue on the creation of communities.
