Fashion Babylon

The decadence of the splendour and wealth of Babylon inspire the film’s title of Gianluca Matarrese, who was introduced into the fashion Olympus by three exceptional guides, i.e., Michelle Elie, a fashion fashion icon of Haitian origins, the musician Casey Spooner, and the drag artist Violet Chachki, winner of “RuPaul’s Drag Race”’s seventh season .
Throughout the chapters Rise, Splendour, and Fall, we follow the three characters among catwalks and fashion shows, gradually discovering a world of gaudy outfits where champagne flows, between marketing and appearances, daily struggles to conquer a front-row seat, and humiliation in a system made of hierarchies. The world described by Matarrese is filled with loneliness and glitter and fuels on the perseverance of its followers in playing their role without a hitch.

Gianluca Matarrese
Gianluca Matarrese was born in Torino and moved to Paris to study cinema and theater. He has worked in French television, as a writer and director for its comedy series on OCS channels broadcast. In 2019 his documentary Fuori tutto (2019) won the award for Best Italian Documentary at the Torino Film Festival. His film La dernière séance (2021) won the Queer Lion at the Venice International Film Critics' Week.
